Body of former Asom Minister Bhrigu Phukan brought to Guwahati

Guwahati, Mar 21 (UNI) The body of former Asom Home Minister Bhrigu Kumar Phukan, who died due to multiple organ failure at AIIMS in New Delhi yesterday, was brought here this afternoon.

The body, which arrived at the Borjhar Airport, was received by the All Asom Students Union(AASU) and brought to the city in a huge procession by the supporters of AASU and North East Students Organisation(NESO).

Different organisations and parties paid their last respect to the departed leader offering floral tributes.

He was 46 and is survived by his wife and a daughter.

The cremation is likely to take place later tonight.

A pall of gloom had descended over the Asom Gana Parishad(AGP) camp, which immediately suspended poll campaign for the next 24 hours as a mark of respect to the departed leader.

For three decades he was one of the top leaders of Asom politics.

One of the signatories to the Asom accord, Mr Phukan was elevated to the post of Minister of Home department of the Asom Gana Parishad government in the 80s.

Mr Phukan was the General Secretary of the ASSU from 1979 to 1985. When the AGP was formed in October 1985, he became its most important leader.

He was likely to fight coming assembly elections from Jalukbari.
