Viplove declared elected to Rajya Sabha
Shimla, Mar 20 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) President Viplove Thakur was today declared elected to Rajya Sabha from the lone seat in the state falling vacant due to the expiry of the term of the current incumbent Kripal Parmar.
She was declared elected after the expiry of deadline for withdrawal of candidature at 1500 hrs here.
Ms Thakur is the twenty-sixth Rajya Sabha member and sixth woman member from Himachal to be elected to the Upper House.
Earlier, Lilavati Mahajan (1956), Satyawati Dang (1968), Mohinder Kaur (1978), Usha Malhotra (1980) and Chandresh Kumari (1996) were elected to Rajya Sabha from the state.
She was the only candidate to file her papers for the seat, as the state unit of the BJP had not fielded any candidate.
A large number of party activists were present on the occasion and cheered Ms Viplove's election to the Rajya Sabha.
