VHP leader elected to Rajya Sabha from Chhattisgarh
Raipur, Mar 20 (UNI) Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Shree Gopal Vyas was today elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Chhattisgarh.
As the deadline for withdrawal of nomination papers came to an end this afternoon, Vidhan Sabha Secretary and returning officer Devendra Verma declared the election of Mr Vyas for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from the state.
Chief minister Dr Raman Singh, his cabinet colleagues and senior party functionaries were present when Mr Vyas received certificate of his election from the returning officer.
The ruling BJP had fielded Mr Vyas, who is incharge of foreign affairs of VHP.
The VHP leader had earlier served as regional head of Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh (RSS) after he took voluntary retirement from Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) where he was working as an engineer.
