Undertrial languishing in mental hospital for last 38 years

Jaunpur, Mar 20 (UNI) A man arrested in 1966 in connection with a murder has been languishing in a mental hospital in neighbouring Varanasi district for the last 38 years.

Official sources said here today that without a court order and bail in the case, Jagdamba Dubey, accused of killing one Sitram Dubey in Nizamuddingpur village here in 1966, has been languishing in the mental hospital since December 23, 1967.

Jagdamba, was arrested in the murder case and then lodged in the Jaunpur district Jail in 1966. Pending any court order in the case and inability of his relatives to get him out on bail, the jail authorities sent him to the Mental Hospital in Varanasi for treatment on December 23, 1967, sources added.

The jail authorities since then have hardly sought any information from the mental hospital on Jagdamba, sources alleged.

Meanwhile, District Judge of Jaunpur, R P Tripathi has fixed April 4 next as the date for hearing in the over 39 year old case and has directed the District Jail Superintendent to file a report on the mental health of Jagdamba.
