Traders take out massive morcha at Azad Maiden
Mumbai, Mar 20 (UNI) Over 10,000 wholesale traders from all across Maharashtra today took out morcha at Azad Maidan in South Mumbai to protest against Octroi duty on various goods.
The agitation was organized by Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) along with Federation of Associations of Maharashtra (FAM) and other trading bodies.
Having submitted a memorandum to Maharashtra Chief Minister, Finance Minister and Brihanmumbai Municipal Commissioner, MCCIA president Eknath Thakur cautioned that they could chalk out their future course of action of the government did not withdraw the duty.
Presently, several essential and non-essential items are costilier by 25 to 30 per cent due to levy of Octroi duty on these goods, Mr Thakur said.
Since no Octroi duty is charged on goods in Gujarat, Rajasthan and other states leading traders and industralists have therefore, shifted from Maharashtra to these states.
