Swimming-England's Tancock wins 100m backstroke

MELBOURNE, Mar 20 (Reuters) Liam Tancock won the men's 100 metres backstroke final at the Commonwealth Games today to give England their eighth swimming gold in five days.

Tancock led all the way to win in a new Commonwealth Games record time of 54.53 seconds.

Australia's Matt Welsh, who had set the previous record at the Manchester Games four years when he spoiled Ian Thorpe's bid for seven golds, finished second in 54.82.

Scotland's Gregor Tait, the 200m champion, was third in 54.89.
