Organisations oppose construction of Tipaimukh dam

Imphal, Mar 20 (UNI) About 36 organisations representing different communities from Manipur have protested the construction of the Tipaimukh dam in Manipur.

A series of protests were organised in the state under the aegis of the action committee against the Tipaimukh project.

As a part of the campaign against the proposed dam, leaflets were distributed by the members of the committee in different parts of the state.

Panti Gnome, a member of the organising committee said the people of Manipur will be adversely affected as the land at the dam site will be controlled by outsiders and render people homeless due to submergence of large number of villages.

North East Electricity Power Corporation(NEEPCO), the implementing agency had claimed that only seven villages would be submerged by the project, but studies have revealed that more than 16 villages will be submerged affecting more that one lakh people from Senapati, Tamenglong and Churanchandpur districts of Manipur and Sinlung hill district council of Mizoram, said Aram Pamei, one of the protestor.
