Local polls postponed in six districts in Lanka's North-East
Colombo, Mar 20 (UNI) The local government election, scheduled for March 30, has been postponed in six electoral districts in the North-East for six months, the Election Secretariat announced here today.
According to a statement from the Election Secretariat, Election Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake has taken the decision to postpone local elections till September 30, for two Municipal Councils, six Urban Councils, and 37 Pradeshiya Sabhas. The districts are Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu and the eastern Batticaloa.
The EC had last week held discussions with district secretaries, who are also the poll returning officers, on the ground situation amidst repeated demands by the Tamil political parties to postpone the elections.
