Farmers protest against proposal to import wheat
New Delhi, Mar 20 (UNI) Farmers from Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh today held a protest rally here against the Government's proposal to import wheat.
Under the aegis of Indian Social Action Forum (INSAF), the farmers said their interest will be harmed by the imports.
''What is the need to import when the wheat harvest in the country will be on target,'' the farmers, who staged the rally at Jantar Mantar here, said.
The farmers demanded that the move be ''dropped'' till the entire wheat harvest had come in.
They said when India announces to import grain, the prices of wheat in the domestic markets crash.
''Our interest are harmed.... Who stands to benefit from the decision,'' they added.
Targeting the recent India-US Agriculture Pact, they demanded that it be scrapped immediately.
Alleging that the government had ''sacrificed agriculture'' to gain concession in the nuclear sector, they said they will oppose any agricultural deal made without consulting them.
