EU sanctions on Belarus very likely- Commissioner

Brussels, Mar 20: The European Union is very likely to impose some sanctions on Belarus after a disputed presidential election on yesterday, European External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner today said.

''From what we have already seen, my view is that some action is very likely,'' she told reporters in a break from an EU foreign ministers' meeting. ''I don't think we are thinking of economic sanctions ... extending visa bans will certainly be one part of it.'' Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik, whose country holds the EU's rotating presidency, said the vote, which President Alexander Lukashenko won by a landslide according to official results, had been held in ''a climate of intimidation''.
