New York, Mar 19 (UNI) Bob Menendez, a Democratic US Senator from New Jersey has said he will join the 'Friends of India Caucus' in America's upper chamber pledging his continued support to promote bilateral relations.

Mr Menendez, who is seeking re-election in the November elections, addressed a meeting where about a 1,000 people from the Indian-American community gathered to facilitate Dr Sudhir Parikh on winning the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman.

''I was part of the Congressional Caucus on India (and Indian Americans) in the House for over 13 years,'' Mr Menendez said adding, now that we're in the Senate, we intend to continue to promote strong India-US relationship by joining the Friends of India Caucus and to be a strong advocate for this relationship.

Congressman Joseph Crowley, a Democrat from New York and a former co-chief of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans, said it was his duty to strengthen the relationship. Both, Mr Pallone and Mr Crowley, handed Dr Parikh a congressional citation.

''If there is a single message I have for you today, it is that it takes only one individual, one community, one nation to build a bridge of friendship, goodwill and cooperation. But once it is in place, millions can cross that bridge,'' Dr Parikh said.

Dr Parikh is a noted specialist on asthma, allergy and immunology.

He is an associate professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey.

The 32-member Friends of India body in the US Senate was set up in 2004 and is headed by Hillary Rodham Clinton, a Democrat from New York, and John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas.
