Manipur celebrates gold haul at Commonwealth games

Imphal, Mar 19 (UNI) Manipur celebrated the victory of local stars Nameirakpam Kunjarani Devi and Yumnam Renubala in weightlifting at the Melbourne Commonwealth games.

Various organisations issued statements congratulating the two women who won gold medals in different weightlifting categories.

Renubala (20), a product of Sports Authority of India (SAI), Uttar Pradesh had started off by playing tug-of-war but later shifted to weightlifting.

Her mother could not say anything when she was asked how she felt after learning that her daughter had bagged a gold for the nation at the Commonwealth games. She simply kept crying while her family members celebrated.

The girl who had no money to travel to other parts of the country to participate in any sports event, had now brought laurels to the nation leading to celebrations all over.

Renubala and her family continues to live in a mud thatched roof at Imphal despite winning gold medals for in various international events.

Kunjarani had also been doing the country proud since 1985. Both the star weightlifter's achievements were lauded by various sports organisations while the people of the state are celebrating their medal winning performance.
