Kambli gifted 35 vada pavs to Sachin on completion of 35th Test to

London, Mar 19 (UNI) When Sachin Tendulkar overtook Sunil Gavaskar's record of scoring the maximum number of Test hundreds, best friend Vinod Kambli gave his childhood pal a gift which they have been exchanging since childhood.

''A vada pav for every hundred scored,'' Kambli revealed, to the ''Daily Telegraph'', gifting Sachin since school days but the feat of 35th Test century being so special, the flamboyant player gave his pal 35 vada pavs to celebrate the success.

Kambli recalled the day when Ramakant Achrekar, their coach, came over to select young players for a summer camp. He said Tendulkar, now considered the world's best batsman, broke down when the Achrekar told him that he was not good enough.

''He (Sachin) was so tense that he was getting beaten each and every ball. Initially, he was told he wasn't good enough and he started crying and begged for another chance. He came back with his brother, Ajit, the next day and his talent was there for all to see,'' Kambli said.

The two went on to smash records thereafter at school level. But what started a joint journey on road to success started becoming difficult for Kambli and easier for Sachin when he became the youngest ever to debut for India.

Tendulkar took ''The elevator to the top whilst I took the stairs'' famous words which summed up the career of the two pals.

But the duo likes to leave the on-field happenings there only and avoid discussing the game.

''You must be joking. We never talk cricket when we get together,'' Kambli said brushing aside suggestions that the meteoric rise of his friend has had any impact on their childhood friendship.

Coming back to the present, Kambli is hoping that Sachin scores a hundred in the ongoing match against England after becoming the most capped Test player for India.

Currently nursing a shin injury, Kambli is busy building a career in Bollywood.

Infact he has already starred in film but unfortunately the movie bombed at the box-office.
