Dubai, Mar 19 (UNI) Jordan has expressed concern over Indian recruiting agencies that send workers in large numbers to the Kingdom without work visas or permits.

Minister of Labour Bassem Salem, who met Indian ambassador R Dayakar to discuss the issue, referred to the case of 200 Indian workers who entered the Kingdom illegally last year.

They were recruited as truck drivers for two Jordanian companies through two Indian recruitment agencies, he told The Jordan Times.

The drivers, who arrived in Amman over six months ago on one-month tourist visa, said half of them were sent to Amman on February 1 while the rest remained in the city of Aqaba awaiting employment.

Some workers were sent home after failing initial driving tests and about half the workers who were transferred to Amman managed to return home leaving 60 drivers in Amman and 120 in Aqaba.

Meanwhile, the workers in Amman said they remain stranded and jobless and have been living in terrible conditions in the capital.

According to official figures, there are 4,878 Indian workers in the country who have work permits.
