Delhi Police kill dreaded criminal in encounter

New Delhi, Mar 19 (UNI) Delhi Police today said a team from the special cell killed a dreaded criminal in an encounter last night at Dilshad Garden in East Delhi.

Addressing a press conference here, Joint Commissioner of Police Karnail Singh said the team killed Ashok of Kisoli in Meerut in the encounter.

Ashok, a member of the Hemant alias Sonu gang, had come for extorting money from a businessman in the capital.

After receiving information, the Delhi Police sent the team to the area to nab the gangster.

Ashok, son of a retired Army personnel, was a post-graduate from Meerut University.

The 33-year-old man was forced to join crime world after he was cheated by a person of Rs 5 lakh after promising to help him become a pilot, Mr Singh said.

A .32 revolver, five spent catridges, six live catridges were recovered from the slain gangster. The Maruti-800 car, which he was using, was also recovered from the spot.

The lead about Ashok was obtained from one of the criminals of the Sonu gang, who was nabbed at Hazart Nizam-ud-din railway station on March 13.

In a joint operation by the Delhi Police and Haryana Police at Gurgaon on March 7, 2006, the police had killed Sonu of Najafgarh and his two associates -- Jaswant and Jaiprakash.
