Nobuaki Tanaka to be Annan's disarmament aide

United Nations, Mar 18 (UNI) UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has appointed Nobuaki Tanaka as the new Undersecretary General for the organisation's Disarmament Affairs.

Mr Tanaka, who is present by Japanese Ambassador to Pakistan will take up his new post on April 6, a UN spokesman said in his career in the Japanese Foreign Ministry, Mr Tanaka dealt with key security issues, including the Korean Peninsula related six-party talks, the spokesman added.

Mr Tanaka, 59, has also dealt with matters relating to non-proliferation of sensitive technologies. He joined the foreign service in 1970 and has handled bilateral economic and political issues.

He was Assistant Director General of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (1994-97), in charge of management and administration and information officer at the from 1980-1983.

His academic background includes a masters from, Cambridge University and a Law Degree from Tokyo University.

He also served as a senior research fellow at the International Institute of Peace Studies, Japan.
