Miscreants desecrate Ambedkar statue; DSS protests
Hubli, Mar 18 (UNI) Tension gripped Bilagi town in Bagalkot district after some miscreants desecrated the statue of Dr B R Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, here early today.
As news about the incident spread, activists of the Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (DSS) called for a bandh in the town and took out a protest march. The protest turned violent when some miscreants started pelting stones, damaging four buses and two other passing vehicles. However, the police brought the situation under control by chasing away the protestors.
Deputy Superintendent of Police C G Kyapan told UNI over phone that the situation in the town was peaceful and under control now.
Prohibitory orders under 144 of the CrPC had been clamped in the town till tomorrow morning, he informed.
