K'taka to come up with comprehensive policy for fishermen

Malpe, Mar 18 (UNI) Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy today informed that his government was contemplating to bring out a comprehensive economic and educational policy for the fishermen community.

Speaking after inaugurating the Rs 62 lakh new ice plant and commercial complex at the Fisheries Harbour here, he said the new JD (S)-BJP coalition government in the state would not let down the fishing community. It was committed to resolving all their problems at the earliest, he added.

He announced that it had been decided to increase the compensation given to families in the event of fishermen losing their lives in mishaps at sea from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000. The government would also actively consider their demand for reducing the interest rate on loans given to fisherwomen to four per cent.

Mr Kumaraswamy said the government was keen on finding a permanent solution to the recurring sea erosion problem on the coastal belt of the state.

The Chief Minister later offered prayers at the famous Sri Krishna temple at Udupi. He was given a 'poorna kumbh swagat' at the temple.
