Jayasinghe stresses on need for Asian Human Rights Charter

Dehra Dun, Mar 18 (UNI) Lanka's Supreme Court Judge Justice Nihal Jayasinghe today stressed on the need for an Asian Human Rights Charter.

Addressing the convocation ceremony of the third and fourth batches of the post graduate diploma in Human Rights at the Rural Litigation and Entitlement Kendra (RLEK)--a Dehradun based NGO, Mr Jayasinghe emphasised on the universal recognition,growth and progress of Human Rights .

Justice S B Sinha, of the Supreme Court presenting an overview of Human Rights to the participants from all over the SAARC region, stressed on the need to contain gross violations and abuse of Human Rights in different parts of the world. He called for adoption of uniform Human Rights code or convention in the SAARC countries.

Justice Pradeep Kant said Gram Panchayats possess great potential in playing a key role in dispensing justice at the grass roots level.

"This is the only tier where people live in a close ambience and are aware of each other's life situations which puts them in a better position to decide when it comes to justice", he said. Justice Madan B. Lokur termed woman as " effective campaigners for social change".
