HC permits uplink facility for Jaya TV channel

Chennai, Mar 18 (UNI) Madras High Court today disposed of a petition, seeking a direction to the Union Government to permit the conversion of the existing Single Channel Per Carrier (SCPC) into Multi Channel Per Carrier (MCPC) Mode, enabling the Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) to receive and uplink the permitted dedicated News and Current Affairs TV channel Jaya Plus.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice A P Shah and Ms Justice Prabha Sridevan disposed of the petition filed by M/s Mavis Satcom Limited.

In its order, the Bench said Senior Counsel B Kumar, appearing for the petitioner placed on record two letters issued by the Union Ministry of Communication and Information Technology and Department of Telecommunication dated March 9 and 10.

In view of the orders issued by the Union Government, the controversy raised in the writ-petition did not survive and the petition was disposed off accordingly.

It was needless to say that upon the petitioner's complying with the conditions stipulated in the letter dated March 10, the competent authority shall grant the necessary Operating License within a period of two weeks, the Bench added.

In the March 10 order, the Union Government conveyed its decision to grant a license for establishing Wireless Telegraph Station(WTS), subject to the petitioner fulfilling certain conditions.
