Enact law to define office of profit: Varkala

New Delhi, Mar 18 (UNI) Mr Varkala Radhakrishnan (CPI-M) today demanded in the Lok Sabha that the government initiate a move to enact a law, clearly defining the offices of profit that would result in the disqualification of MPs and MLAs.

Raising the issue during zero hour, Mr Radhakrishnan said this had become necessary in the wake of the disqualification of Ms Jaya Bachchan as a Rajya Sabha member for holding the post of Chairperson of UP Film Development Council.

The member also pointed out that some similar cases were pending for decision which might result in disqualification of more members.

The office of profit had not been properly defined in the statute, he contended.
