Couple held on conversion charge, Bible study centre attacked
Jabalpur, Mar 18 (UNI) A couple was arrested on the charge of promoting conversion to Christianity, while four VHP activists were arrested after they attacked a Bible study centre run by the couple here last night, police today said.
Police said Mukesh Jacob and his wife Sarla Jacob were detained under section four of Freedom of Religion Act and literature relating to conversion recovered from their three-storey building in the Gorakhpur police station area.
VHP and Dharma Jagaran Manch workers, led by Yogesh Agrawal, who raided the building, ransacked the office of the Youth Vidya Mission being run by the couple.
Tension mounted in the area after the Hindu manch workers staged demonstration before the mission office, forcing the police to intervene.
On the complaint of the couple, police arrested Yogesh Agrawal, Kedar Namdeo, Arun Pillai and Pushpendra Singh on the charge of ransacking the Mission office and attacking the couple.
Superintendent of Police D Srinivas Rao said eight youth from different states were attending the Bible class when the Hindu activists raided the Mission office. The Hindu activists alleged that the Mission was promoting religious conversion for a long time on the pretext of Bible study centre.
VHP Secretary General Pravin Togadia is also camping in the town for a three-day conference of Hindu activists.
