Acting VC appointed, Panel set up to appoint new VC
Kohima, Mar 18 (UNI) After a month-long agitation, teachers and students of the Nagaland University (NU) and the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) appointed Prof B S Chauhan as the acting Vice-Chancellor (VC) and set up a committee to appoint a new VC.
This was conveyed to the Registrar of NU by the Human Resource Ministry yesterday. Prof Chauhan is the senior most in the hierarchy.
The academic system of the state is expected to run smoothly from today following the development.
The Nagaland University Teachers' Association (NUTA) had started a campaign against the former VC Prof G D Sharma, alleging mismanagement of funds sanctioned by the University Grant Commission (UGC).
Earlier, a delegation of NUTA visited New Delhi to meet HRD officials and produced documents that indicated misappropaiation of funds.
The delegation also submitted a representation to President A P J Abdul Kalam and Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG).
The CAG authorities asked the CBI to inquire into the matter.
Post Graduate Students Union (PGSU) of all the three campuses-Kohima, Lumami and Medziphemalater joined the teachers in boycotting classes and locking the offices.
