Panel set up to appoint new VC
Kohima, Mar 18: After month-long agitation, teachers and students of the Nagaland University (NU) and the Ministry of Human Resource Development(MHRD) appointed Prof B S Chauhan as the acting Vice-Chancellor (VC) and set up a committee to appoint a new VC.
This was conveyed to the Registrar of NU by the Human Resource Ministry yesterday. Prof Chauhan is the senior most in the hierarchy.
The academic system of the state is expected to run smoothly from today following the development.
The Nagaland University Teachers' Association (NUTA) had started the campaign against the VC-- Prof G D Sharma alleging mismanagement of funds sanctioned by the University Grant Commission (UGC).
A delegation of NUTA earlier visited New Delhi to meet MHRD officials and produced documents that indicated mismanagement of funds.
The delegation also submitted a representation to the President of India and the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG).
The CAG authorities asked the CBI to inquire into the matter.
The Post Graduate Students Union (PGSU) of all the three campuses-Kohima, Lumami and Medziphema later joined the teachers in boycotting their classes and locked the offices.
