UP sugar production crosses 4.5 mln tonnes

Lucknow, Mar 17 (UNI) Registering a rise of almost 0.49 million tonnes over last year, sugar production in Uttar Pradesh reached a record 4.5 mln tonnes as on March 7 last.

The 114 sugarmills functioning in UP crushed 49 mln tonnes of sugarcane to produce 4.536 mln tonnes of sugar. The corrosponding figures for last year were 42 and 4.088 mln tonnes respectively.

UP sugarcane commissioner Rahul Bhatnagar said today, sugarcane farmers were made payments -- including advances -- amounting to Rs 5,170 crore by the state government this fiscal.

Last year, similar payments stood at Rs 3,917 crore.

Mr Bhatnagar expressed confidence that UP would once again secure numero uno position in sugar production this financial year.

''This crushing season, we have pegged sugar output at over 5.5 mln tonnes, up from 5.58 mln tonnes last season,'' he added.

The crushing is still on at the 64 private, 21 cooperative and 5 State Sugar Corporation sugarmills, he informed.

Meanwhile, 17 Corporation and 7 cooperative sugarmills closed shop after they completed crushing under their area.
