Mumbai, Mar 17 (UNI) As many as 21 new patients with gastroenteritis symptoms were admitted to the Maharashtra government-run G T Hospital till 1700 hrs today, taking the total number of patients admitted in the hospital to 230.

Briefing reporters here this evening, Additional Municipal Commissioner Vijaysinh Patankar said the number of patients being admitted in the hospital with gastroenteritis symptoms has declined to 21 from yesterday's 90. However, the total figure rose to 230.

He said 24 patients were discharged from the hospital during the day today.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started supplying drinking water to all the affected areas through tankers and is also supplying with educational material to the people, he said.

He said 28 blood samples of patients had been taken for testing of Cholera and report was expected tomorrow, thereafter it would be confirmed whether there is cholera or not.

However, Mr Patankar said the death toll due to gastro had not increased over two--a 11-yr-old boy succumbed to the illness on Tuesday and a 17-year-old girl died on Wednesday in the hospital.

The patients are primarily from the Crawford market, Municipal chawl, Bengalipura and Sabu Siddique road areas in A, B, and C wards of the municipal corporation in South Mumbai, which received contaminated water due to a pipeline leakage a few days ago.
