Tension builds up in Satellite township as fresh violence breaks out

Mumbai, Mar 17 (UNI) Situation at Ghansoli in the satellite township of Navi Mumbai following yesterday's police firing and group clashes which had claimed three lives, continued to be tense with the fresh outbreak of violence this evening.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil, who also holds the Home portfolio, while rejecting an Opposition demand for a judicial inquiry in the Legislative Assembly into yesterday's firing after the House rejected an adjournment motion, however, later in the evening in the Legislative Counil announced that a probe by a DCP (Deputy Commissioner of Police) level officer to find out if there was any 'political hand' in the violence.

Mr Patil announced to set up a new police station at Ghansoli.

The Deputy Chief Minister announced a compensation of Rs one lakh to the kith and kin of the deceased (two) killed in police firing yesterday.

All the towns in Navi Mumbai--Vashi, Sanpada, Jui Nagar, Nerul, Kharghar and the affected areas around Ghansoli--observed a 'bandh' with the shops and establishment remaining closed from around noon and even the auto-rickshaws forced to go off road.

Fresh outbreak of violence was reported at Koparkhairne this evening when some villagers attacked 'Mathadi' (headload) workers at Teen Taki.
