HP to continue with auction or tender system in sale of liquor

Shimla, Mar 17 (UNI) The Himachal Pradesh's 2006-07 Excise Policy will continue with its system of auction or tender for the sale of liqour, keeping in view the state's topography and dispersal of vends, Excise and Taxation (ET) Commissioner Narinder Chauhan today said.

The state cabinet, in its meeting held recently, had also decided to have one uniform rate of Rs 23 Per Proof Litre (PPL) for all brands of Indian Made Foreign Spirits (IMFS), he added.

The excise duty on country liquor had also been reduced from Rs nine PPL to Rs seven PPL, he said, adding that the reduction in the excise duty would also be available to Canteen Store Department (CSD) lifting.

Mr Chauhan said, the cabinet, however, decided to retain a levy Rs. two per bottle as additional license fee and 20 per cent VAT on liquor sale.

The cabinet had also retained the quota of country liquor at 125 lakh proof litres and has sanctioned additional quota of 20 per cent for the year 2006-07 without any extra levy of excise duty, he said.

However, for additional quota beyond 20 per cent additional license fee of Rs three PPL would be levied, he added.

The ET Commissioner said bidders would also be required to lift minimum of 80 per cent quota of country liquor, he said.

The retail price of beer has been fixed at Rs 50 and Rs 60 for mild and strong beer, he said, adding that the departmental stores have been authorized to lift beer direct from L-IB and L-1C after payment of assessed fee of Rs 15 per bottle.
