New Delhi, Mar 17 (UNI) Victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots today demanded that the government extend the last date of filing of compensation claims as some of the affected families had not been able to get the forms yet.

''The forms are not available at one place and people are still looking for forms to fill and deposit them. The deadline for Februray 28 should be immediately extended else the package announced by the government would mean nothing to them,'' All India Riot Victim Relief Committee President Kuldip Singh Bhogal said here today.

''The riot victims have been running from pillar to post to get forms for getting the compensation,'' Mr Bhogal said in a release.

On Februrary 6, 2006, the government had issued a notification giving 22 days to the riot victims to file their claims, which they claimed was totally inadequate.

''Many have moved away from their homes in these 22 years, while some would have died. The time frame to file claims should be extended, especially in view of the small number of forms being received by the government,'' he said.

He urged the government to ensure that compensation reaches to all 1984 riot victims irrespective of their state of residence, and whether they have been given some compensation before.

The Centre had announced a package of Rs 715 crore for giving compensation to those affected by the riots.
