Chennai, Mar 16 (UNI) Madras High Court today struck down an amendment to the Tamil Nadu Panchayat Act brought by the Tamil Nadu Government removing restrictions on age and tenure for the post of State Election Commissioner.

A Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice A P Shah and Ms Justice Prabha Sridevan, gave the orders while allowing a petition from Congress Legislative Party Leader S R Balasubramoniyan, challenging the amendment.

The Bench, however, permitted the incumbent to continue to hold the post for four weeks to enable the state government to make alternative arrangements.
