Sri Lanka High Commissioner calls on Speaker

New Delhi, Mar 16 (UNI) Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee today welcomed new Sri Lankan High Commisioner C R Jayasinghe and stressed India's committment to maintain close economic and cultural ties with the Island nation.

''Greater interactions between the two countries would further pave the way for knowing each other better and deepening the existing friendly ties, Mr Chatterjee told the diplomat.

Mr Jayasinghe said there was broad consensus among all the political parties in Sri Lanka that it should have the closest ties and friendship with India.

He invited the Speaker to visit Sri Lanka to take part in the upcoming SAARC Speakers Conference to be held later this month.

Mr Chatterjee accepted the invitation.
