Guwahati, Mar 16 (UNI) Leiutenant General A S Jamwal today assured ex-defence personnel of the region that the army would start new housing projects to provide better housing facilities to both serving and retired defence personnel at a comparatively low cost.

Addressing defence and ex-servicemen at Narangi cantonment here, Mr Jamwal, who has recently taken over as the adjutant general, said the army headquarters has already initiated action on the welfare schemes for the ex-servicemen.

We have sought reports from the state on the functioning of the sainik directorates as our ministry is bearing half of its expenditure, he said.

The general admitted that both the state and district offices under the sainik directorates or boards were not functioning properly.
