New party launched in Pondy

Pondicherry,Mar 16 (UNI) A new party to ensure the welfare of the fishing community and Backward Class (BC) and Scheduled Caste (SC) people was launched in the Union Territory here today.

Addressing the press, Uzhappali Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (UMMK) President A B Rajendran said the objective of his party was to ensure the welfare of the fishermen on the East Coast from Chennai to Kanniyakumari and the BC and SC people.

He also said the UMMK will strive to fulfill the aims of fishermen leader and freedom fighter Sindanai Sirppi Singaravelar.

Meanwhile, applications from aspirants to contest the elections on Congress ticket was pouring in at the party office today, the last day for submission of applications.

As may as 40 persons had applied between 1000 hrs and 1130 hrs this morning taking the total to over 300. The filing of applications will close at 1700 hrs today.
