NEMF condemns attacks on North-East journalists
New Delhi, Mar 16 (UNI) The North East Media Forum (NEMF), an organisation of North-East journalists in the national capital, has condemned the increasing incidents of atrocities on media personnel in the region.
NEMF members who met here recently particularly condemned the recent killing of Prahlad Goala, Goalghat correspondent of 'Asomiya Khabar', the attack on senior journalist Ratan Luwancha in Imphal allegedly by an underground group and the assault on 'Asomiay Pratidin' correspondent Robin Dhekial Phukan in the Kakopathar area.
The NEMF journalists observed a minute's silence as a mark of respect towards Goala. A dharna had been held earlier in front of the Assam Bhavan here to protest the attacks on media personnel in the state.
The NEMF also elected its new executive body with Sushanta Chowdhury as President and Utpal Borpjuari (Deccan Herald) as General Secretary. The other office bearers are Rima Sarmah of 'Dainik Janasadharan' (Vice-President), Khagen Kalita of 'Ajir Dainik Batori' (Assistant General Secretary) and Sekhar Dey of 'Dainik Jugasankha' (Treasurer).
The Executive Committee members are Asish Gupta (Asomiya Pratidin), Piku Dutta (The Sentinnel), Rajiv Bhattacharya (Telegraph) and Rajesh Bihagra (Dainik Sonar Cachar).
