Mob set ablaze police van after accident

Jamshedpur, Mar 16: Infuriated over the death of a youth in a road accident, a mob set ablaze a police jeep at Pardih area here last night, police said today (Mar 16, 2006).

The incident occurred when the youth, one Bharat Kumar (22), fell from the police van when the vehicle hit a truck from behind. He was run over by another truck and died on the spot.

The incident triggered a widespread protest among the people and they set on fire the vehicle of Mango police station. The mob also staged road blockade till late last night. They did not allow the police to remove the body and demanded action against the driver of the jeep, the officier-in-charge and other police personnel, who were on duty.

The body was removed later and was sent for post mortem today, police added.

East Singhbhum police superintendent Ashish Batra has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
