Life imprisonment for BSF constable

Basirhat, Mar 16 (UNI) A Border Security Force (BSF) constable was today sentenced life imprisonment by a district court on charges of committing murder in 2005.

Additional District and sessions court judge Malay Marut Bandopadhyay convicted constable Praveen Kumar and handed him to life imprisonment for killing a woman after molesting her in a border camp at Ghojadanga near here in West Bengal's North 24-Parganas.

The judge pronounced the verdict of the 10-month-old case and sentenced the 32-year-old BSF jawan to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5000 or an additional six month imprisonment in default of payment of fine.

Prosecution said the jawan of 106 Battalion, posted at Border outpost at Ghojadanga near here, dragged a village woman in broad daylight to the camp and molested her. When the villagers gheraoed the camp, the constable fired on the woman. She was later admitted to Basirhat sub-divisional hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
