Dowry case: Husband, mother-in-law sentenced

Bellary, Karnataka, Mar 16 (UNI) A lower court has sentenced to one year simple imprisonment a woman's husband and mother-in-law in a dowry harassment case, while acquitting her brother-in-law.

Bellary First Class Judicial Magistrate U Chandrasekhar also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 each on the two, besides directing them to return within three months the Rs 1,50,000 they had taken as dowry from the parents of the woman, B M Bharathi.

Bharathi, a resident of Bellary, had lodged a complaint with the Cowl Bazaar police station on May 19, 2004, stating that her husband Diwakar, mother-in-law Padmavathi and brother-in-law Srinivas were harassing her to bring more dowry from her parents.

Though her parents had given Rs one lakh and gold ornaments during their marriage on July four, 2003, her in-laws were mentally torturing her to bring more dowry. Her parents' subsequent ''gift'' of Rs 50,000 and three tolas of gold also did not end the torture of her in-laws, she submitted.
