Jalgaon, Maharashtra, Mar 16 (UNI) Over 10,000 chickens have been culled in bird flu-hit Jalgaon villages since late last evening, officials today said.

Culling operations have been completed in the four villages of Marul, Navi, Borkheda Budruk and Salva villages where 10,000 birds were killed and the owners paid a total compensation of Rs 78,000, District Collector Vijay Singhal and Animal Husbandry Commissioner V Kumar told a joint press conference here today.

The culling operations are continuing, they said adding that the authorities were required to fetch the birds from homes or exhort the people to surrender them as there are no formal poultries here but only backyard ones.

However, the people have been very cooperative and are coming forward on their own, they said. Gram sabha meetings were held last evening and people were made aware of the gravity of the situation following which there has been a positive response from the villagers.

Meanwhile, the authorities have dispatched 147 health teams early this morning which will visit 174 villages to spread health awareness among the villagers and check for human infection cases, if any.

Isolation wards have been kept ready in the rural hospital to meet any exigencies, the collector said.

The collector informed that villages have been advised against holding the weekly ''haats'' (markets) till further orders as a precautionary measure.
