15 persons, including SP injured as mill workers, police clash
Ludhiana, Mar 16 (UNI) Fifteen persons, including the Superintendent of Police, were injured in a clash between workers and police outside the Oswal Wollen Mill on the G T Road here this morning, police said.
Superintendent of Police Kuldeep Singh (City II), who was himself injured in the clash, said that section 144 has been imposed in the area.
He said the clash occurred when hundreds of workers collected outside the mill, protesting against the termination of services of some of their colleagues by the management on March 13. Police had to resort to a lathicharge to disperse the agitating workers, who turned unruly and indulged in pelting of stones at police personnel.
In the melee, SP and four other policemen and at least 10 workers were injured. Police fired five teargas shell to disperse the crowd.
The SP said 10 persons have been arrested in this connections under section 307, 148, 149, 427, 353 and 186 of the IPC.
As a result, the movement of traffic on the GT road was disrupted and it was later diverted through link roads.
Extra police force has been called to maintain law and order as tension prevailed in the area.
