Work on Tadadi thermal power project to start next year

Sirsi, Karnataka, Mar 15 (UNI) Work on the proposed 4,000 MW ultra mega thermal power project at Tadadi in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka will begin next year and was expected to be completed in 2011, Karnataka Power Corporation Engineer Ramesh Kumar said today.

Talking to newspersons at Karwar he said five thermal power plants of 800 MW each using 1,500 cusecs of water would be erected at Tadadi. Sea water would be used as coolant and the same would be drained into the sea after purification, he added.

The plant would require 40,000 tonnes of coal every day, he said adding half a kg of coal would be required for generating one unit of power.

Mr Kumar said about 15 lakh tonnes of flying ash would be generated at the plant which would be utilised for manufacturing cement and bricks.

The Centre would appoint technical experts for the proposed project and prepare a detailed report, after which a public hearing would take place, he said.
