Aizawl, Mar 15 (UNI) A year after the Mizoram assembly agreed to downsize the number of government-owned vehicles, the general administration department is all set to dispose off more than 600 vehicles.

The task force on privaitisation of government vehicles issued an order yesterday saying as many as 600 vehicles will be auctioned out to the public.

According to the task force, the primary objective of downsizing the fleet was to reduce the expenditure on vehicles.

The first phase of auction will be completed by next week, where officers, who wished to buy the government vehicles they were earlier entitled to, will bid first.

The public auction notice will be put up soon after the officials complete their bidding for the vehicles.

A State Bank of India car loan scheme will also be available for these officers at the rate of 8.5 per cent, an official from the task force said.

Officers from the ranks of deputy secretary, under secretary, joint directors, assistant directors, deputy directors, heads of offices, sub-divisional heads and executive engineers of engineering departments will not be allotted government vehicles.

The Mizoram government has a fleet of 1,121 vehicles.

After the downsizing, the government will have to do with just 400 vehicles.
