Kolkata, Mar 15 (UNI) Responding to a humanatarian appeal, the Japanese government has decided to donate 59,275 US dollars (about Rs 2.6 million) for the assistance of some visually impaired girls in rural Bengal under its worldwide ''Grassroot Assistance'' programme.

Consul General of Japan Yoshikazu Takeuchi will hand over a cheque of the said amount to Ms Gargi Sengupta, Secretary of ''Voice of World'', a city-based non-governmental organisation after the signing of the necessary ''Grant Contract'' with them here on March 21, sources at the Japanese Consulate in Kolkata today informed.

They said the amount had been granted for the construction of a hostel-cum-vocational training centre for the visually impaired students with the facilities of Braille library and Braille printers at VOW's centre at Rishra in Hooghly district.

The grant would also go a long way in helping the visually impaired girls of the Centre continue their study and obtain vocational skill, which in turn would ensure their socio-economic uplift in the state, the sources added.
