Govt to promote Urdu in J

Jammu, Mar 15 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir Government assured the state legislative council today that all measures have been taken to promote the official language, Urdu in the state but the use of English for official purposes would be continued.

Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig informed the Upper House, the official language of the state would be Urdu, in terms with section 145 of the constitution of Jammu and Kashmir, and Government were taking all steps to promote the language.

He said English would be continued for all official purposes of the state as before the commencement of the Assembly, unless the legislature by law otherwise provides. However, Urdu was used for various proceedings and records by the subordinate judiciary, police and revenue agencies, he added.

Replying to a joint question by Sofi Ghulam Mohammad and Nazir Ahmad Mir, Mr Baig said Jammu and Kashmir state academy of art culture and languages has been entrusted with the responsibility in this regard.
