Kohima, Mar 14 (UNI) The Kohima District Magistrate through an order promulgated under section 144 CRPC has banned assembly of more than five persons around the Nagaland University (NU) area.

The order has given after Post Graduate Students' Union (PGSU) activists went on rampage yesterday and burnt furniture of the university.

The cadres also damaged office rooms of vice-chancellor, registrar and finance officer.

Police had to hurl tear gas shells and use water cannons to disperse the irate mob.

The Nagaland University Teachers' Association (NUTA) and the PGSU of Kohima, Lumami and Medziphema campuses were on agitation demanding acceptance of resignation of vice-chancellor Prof G D Sharma for his alleged involvement in "mismanaging" funds of the university.

Prof Sharma had submitted his resignation on February 28 following agitation by NUTA.

A NUTA delegation also recently visited New Delhi and held series of talks with officials of Human Resource Development Ministry, University Grants Commission (UGC) and Federation of Central Universities Teachers Association (FEDCUTA) and submitted documents in support of allegations of fund mismanagement.

Talking to mediamen yesterday, NUTA president M S Rosemary said NUTA would not allow such corruption and politics inside the University campus and threatened to continue with the agitation.
