JK HC set asides election of PDP MLC

Jammu, Mar 14: In a major setback to the ruling coalition partner Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Jammu and Kashmir High Court has set aside the election of its Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Tassadiq Hussain and declared Mohammad Rashid Qureshi of National Conference elected to the seat.

Justice Y P Nargotra, after hearing the arguments pronounced the judgement yesterday (Mar 13, 2006) on the petition filed by Mr Qureshi declaring the election of Mr Hussain as 'void'. He said Mr Hussain was not eligible to contest the seat which was reserved for Poonch district.

Mr Qureshi had pointed out in his petition under section 50 (3) of the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir that the seat was reserved for Poonch.
