Jayalalithaa nominated for Nobel peace prize 2006

Chennai, Mar 14: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa has been nominated for the Nobel peace prize 2006 by the Indian chapter of the US-based World Federation of Tamil Youth (WFTY).

The AIADMK supremo had been nominated for the highest honour in recognition of her efforts towards empowerment of women and elimination of gender discrimination, WFTY President Vijay G Prabakar told a press conference here.

The WFTY (Indian Chapter) Advisor and former Vice-Principal of the city-based Women's Christian College Dr Grisilda Rengasami, who sent the nomination to the Norwegian Nobel institute, said Ms Jayalalithaa was the first Chief Minister of India to be nominated for the Nobel peace prize.

''Her relentless pursuit for women's empowerment through innovative programmes and policies in Tamil Nadu and her dynamic leadership in effective relief and rehabilitation during tsunami had won worldwide acclaim,'' she added.
