HC asks MCD to file report on action against sweepers
New Delhi, Mar 14 (UNI) The Delhi High Court today asked the MCD Commissioner to file within four weeks a status report on the action initiated against the errant safai karamcharis and their supervisors due to worsening sanitary condition in the Capital.
A division bench of Justice Vijender Jain and Justice S N Aggarwal asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi Commissioner to explain to the court on the action taken with regard to the order pronounced on July 27, 2005.
In its order, the High Court had asked the MCD Commissiner to initiate action against the sweepers and the supervisors who wilfully neglected their duties.
Noting that the matter was very serious, the court observed that the MCD could mechanise the cleaning system if 60,000-odd safai karamcharis did not discharge their duties properly.
Lt Col(retd) B B Sharan, president of NGO 'Nyayabhumi', in a PIL alleged that the MCD was spending Rs 400 crore to pay salaries to safai karamcharis who did not discharge their duites properly.
They, in turn, deploy proxy staff paying a less amount from their own pocket to do the job in their absence, the petition alleged.
