New Delhi, Mar 14 (UNI) A delegation of Gujarat MPs, headed by Union Minister of State for Petroleum Dinshaw J Patel, met Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz and sought permission for increasing the height of Sardar Sarovar to 121.91 metres from 110.64 metres, as recommended by the Narmada Control Authority.

Asserting that early action was needed as continued delay would cause hardship to the people in view of the approaching monsoons, the MPs said the Ministry should accept NCA's recommendation and accord immediate permission in the interest of the people in Gujarat.

Leader of Opposition in Gujarat Assembly Arjun Modhwadia along with MPs Mr Madhusudan Mistri, Mr Virji Bhai Thumar and Prof Alka Kshatriya were among the leaders who met Mr Soz.

While agreeing with the concern expressed by the MPs on the dam issue, the Minister said one should not overlook the rehabilitation and resettlement aspect. ''A guarantee should come from the Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh governments on this issue. The sooner the government ensured rehabilitation of the affected families, the better it would be for the project as well as the state,'' he said.
