Govt moves to improve aviation infrastructure

New Delhi, Mar 14 (UNI) The government has taken various initiatives in the past one year to open up more airports across the country, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Praful Patel said today.

Besides, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is modernising 35 non-metro airports in phases upto 2010-11 with focus on airside and cityside development at a cost of Rs 4,662 crore.

Mr Patel said there is proposal for development of greenfield airports at Hassan, Gulbarga and Gangtok.

The AAI has taken initiative for operationalisation of airports at Cooch Behar, Pant Nagar, Akola, Gondia, Surat and Mysore following demands by airlines, he told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.

The Gondia airstrip is also being developed for establishment of a national flying institute, he added.

In reply to another question, Mr Patel said the airports at Amritsar, Nagpur, Srinagar, Jaipur and Calicut have been given international status in the past three years.

An in principle decision has been taken to initiate the process of modernising Chennai airport.

Mr Patel said the AAI has taken up construction of 81 bays at four metro airports in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai besides 155 bays at 50 non-metro airports.
