Backing for Gurukula system of education for music

Mysore, Mar 14 (UNI) Karnataka Sangeetha and Nritya Kala Academy Chairman Pandit Rajashekhar Mansoor today opined that only the ancient Gurukula system of education could churn out good musicians.

Inaugurating a two-day national seminar on 'Classical and Theatre Music' organised by the Fine Arts College of Mysore University here, he said varsities should recognise eminent gurus and students should search for such teachers. Lack of methodology in teaching music as a subject had led to bachelors, masters and doctorates in music failing to sing a raga for even 15 minutes. A perfect syllabus should be drawn up with a prescribed timeframe for completion.

Speaking on the occasion, Mysore University Vice-Chancellor Prof J Shashidhar Prasad assured that the varsity would recognise musicians who come forward to teach students and called upon the artists to unite under one umbrella.

Television and movies had destroyed theatre. As interactive programmes have been reduced to publicity stunts, music academies should organise such programmes to create an awareness among musicians, he said.

Over 100 delegates from across the country were participating in the seminar.
